The goal of an application modernization project is to create new business value from existing applications.

- Assess application capabilities relationship to service portfolio, including solving duplication issues and standardization opportunities
- Define architecture that facilitates transition and retirement as necessary
- An understanding of trends such as DevOps, Microservices and Platform as a service and the roles they play in modernization
